It’s no secret that I’m a fan of Instagram. I’m such a fan and a believer in the power of Instagram as a marketing tool that I’ve decided to dedicate a portion of my business to helping other brands thrive on Instagram!
Over the next several weeks I will be diving into Instagram, dissecting each element of the app, that when used strategically can be a powerful marketing tool for your brand. I’m all about telling a stronger brand story! Not only is a strong brand story integral to building brand awareness but it is also the best way to gain trust and create a community among consumers. If that is something that you are striving to achieve for your brand, you may want to consider Instagram as a platform for telling your brand story!
If you are new here, you’ll want to check back on the last couple of blog posts, as they pertain to some Instagram basics as well. However, starting now, each upcoming blog post in this series will be dedicated to one specific element of the app.

Today, let’s chat about the very first thing that your followers and potential followers see when they land on your Instagram feed…your bio!
The first step in telling a stronger brand story on Instagram is to create a captivating bio. It might sound obvious, but many brands are hanging out on Instagram with a bio that doesn’t necessarily invite people to follow them! While that probably sounds crazy, it is true. The good thing is that this is a relatively easy fix. If your bio is missing any of the following 5 things, you’ll want to add them right now!
1. Who you are!
If you are a small company or if the brand is based around you, include your name in the bio as well! If you are a personal brand and your handle is already your name, it is easy for viewers to know who you are. However, if your handle is not your name, let people know who is behind the account. People relate to other people, so including your name naturally tells the viewer who you are, puts a name to the face behind the posts and confirms that your account isn’t just another spam account.
2. What you do!
Again, this one sounds like a no-brainer but often times brands don’t include what they actually do into their bio which makes it unclear for viewers to know why you are hanging out on Instagram in the first place!
3. Your location!
This especially holds true for brick and mortar brands since you will want people to know where they can go to find your shop. If you don’t currently have a physical location, letting your viewers know where you are located can help create a common ground between you and the viewer. Since Instagram is an app with accounts worldwide it will help everyone understand your posts a little bit better if the viewer is able to relate to where you are in the world. However, if you don’t have a physical location and you wish to market worldwide, you may be off the hook on this one! I personally think it helps create stronger connections and I would add it, but ultimately it is up to you.
4. How to reach you!
Once you’ve caught the attention of new followers, you’ll want them to engage further! By including an email address, phone number or by using your bio link as the gateway to your website, your new followers will have an outlet to reach you off of the app!
5. Call to Action!
The goal is to not only gain followers but to also create leads for what your brand has to offer! The best way to invite them to engage with you further is through a brand freebie or a call to action that benefits your followers! This can be in the form of a free guide, download, product, coupon code, etc. In exchange for the freebie, you will most likely want your followers to sign up for your email list. Using the link in your bio to connect viewers to the call to action is a great way to not only gain more followers and email leads but to once again get your followers off of the app and into the hands of where your brand lives.
